Vests for Valor

One of our teachers is a puppy raiser for K9s for Warriors.  She has had Valor for nearly a year and as part of the training Valor goes everywhere with her - even school!  The kids in her class have become very attached to Valor and she really is part of the class.
Valor is 2nd from the left - black lab, red vest!
Valor is one-year-old now and will soon start the next stage of training and then be matched up with a warrior.  Also school is nearly over.  The teacher wanted to give the kids a lasting reminder of Valor so she ordered little stuffed chocolate lab puppies.

I offered to make little service vests for the puppies.  Thankfully they turned out simpler than I first envisioned.  No buckles or straps.  Just a band with her name that velcros on.

Little S insisted it be removable for better play options.  She has dog napped the sample!
Isn't she cute!
I am honored to have had a small part in the impact Valor has had and will continue to have in people's lives.
The real Valor is even cuter!

Stash Report 042416

Crazy busy week and I am behind on reporting.  Hope to catch up a bit today.

Finished the Meet in the Middle flimsy.  Woo hoo.  A fun top to piece from Jo's Country Junction.  It is destined to go to my SIL for her wedding in June.  -6.18 yards

Had a yard sale with my sister and got rid of some odd non-quilty fabrics in the free pile.  -3 yards

Dropped off the leftovers from the yard sale at a local thrift store and discovered they were in the process of reorganizing and so everything was fill a brown grocery bag for $3.  Found some nice cottons.  By the time I filled the bag with stuff for school/work for which I will be reimbursed, I figure the fabric was free.  Can't go wrong there. The 4 yards of cream will be super useful.  Not sure what I'll do with the fleece (brown w/ pink circles), but a yard is enough for something.  Maybe more monkey blankets.  The prints will work themselves into something.  + 8.25 yards

So here are my new totals:

Fabric Used/Out This Week: 9.18 yards
Fabric Used/Out in 2016: 27.03 yards

Fabric In This Week:  8.25 yards
Fabric In 2016: 24.75 yards

Net Used 2016:  2.28 yards

Seems like a lot more fabric has come in this year than usual, but I'm getting it out slightly faster, so it all works.

Meet in the Middle is a Flimsy

My SIL in Guatemala is getting married.  She is a craftsy kind of person and has made a quilt herself.  She has seen me make many many quilts.  I knew she would appreciate a quilt, but I didn't want to chose a pattern or color on my own.  So I asked her to choose 3-5 quilts that she liked and give me a basic color or colors to work with.  I directed her to Quiltville and Jo's Country Junction as starting points since I have made many quilts from their patterns.

In less than a week she had chosen 2 designs and the color blue - all shades of blue.  So of her two choices  I picked Meet in the Middle from Jo's Country Junction and started cutting into all my blues.  Since she doesn't know which one I picked it will still be a surprise.

I made a few adaptations to the pattern to end up with a full size quilt.  I made 42 strips instead of the 32 in the pattern and my white stripes were longer.  So mine will be longer and wider.  This was a super easy pattern to adjust for size.

This was a relatively quick quilt to put together.  The hardest part was the randomizing of the blues.  I used a variety of white on whites and I just didn't worry about where they landed.  There are a few that ended up side by side and one that ended up 3 in a row, but I think it just adds to the charm.

My Stash Took A Hit

Stash Report 041716

I am nearly finished with the Meet in the Middle quilt for my SIL and it is all blues.  I knew I did not have anything large enough or enough of anything to even piece a backing. I was dreading having to buy a huge amount of fabric for the backing.

This week I was at the craft store getting something for work.  I can usually avoid the temptation to buy fabric if I am on a work-related mission.  But I always check out the clearance fabrics just in case.

Lo and behold, in the clearance section, marked "AS IS $2/yard" was a bolt of medium blue 100% cotton.  I opened it up to see what was wrong.  The cutter lady opened it up to see what was wrong.  The only thing we could see was very very light blurs of slight discoloration.  For the backing of a quilt this would not be a problem.  I had her measure 7 yards.
Not the greatest picture, but the idea is - it works!

Then just as she was about to cut I came to my senses. Buy the whole bolt!  I have at least 3 flimsys that are predominately blue and need backings.  So I should be able to back at least 2 quilts with this.  Meet in the Middle will get done in the very near future so that will be outage.

So I'm taking a hit in numbers, but my pocketbook is thanking me for it!

I Absolutely Love It

I am so happy with how this turned out.  It was definitely a win win for me.   Used some of the UFO units. Used stash for borders and found a big chunk of stash that will work for the backing   More importantly - I love it!

But I don't need to keep it and the girls are fine with letting it go.  So I will finish it and send it off for Hands 2 Help knowing that I gave my best and didn't just make do.

Tasty Tuesday - Twice Baked Potato Casserole

Little S wanted mashed potatoes for Easter.  Little S always wants mashed potatoes!  I wanted something a little more formal. I was thinking twice baked potatoes but that was too much work for 15 people and I was already low on energy.  So I googled potato casseroles.  Low and behold a yummy looking twice baked potato casserole from The Pioneer Woman.  Sure to be a winner.

A few adaptations.  I was not feeding cowboys so we halved the recipe right away.  It was a hot & humid day so I didn't want the oven on for hours baking potatoes - and Little S was already peeling potatoes before I realized they need to be baked not boiled.  That was kind of a duh moment!

As the Queen of Make Do I forged ahead fearlessly.  We boiled the potatoes, drained them and then followed the rest of the recipe pretty well. Didn't put peels in though since ours were raw.  Also left the bacon as an add-on since my niece is a vegetarian.

The family reviews were amazing.  Everyone loved it.  Little S actually ate 2 bowls before it was even baked the second time.  There was another mashed potato aficionado at lunch and he declared them amazing as well.  So this recipe is a keeper for sure.  I had to buy more potatoes so we can make it again since there were not enough leftovers!

Ree's Baked Potato Casserole

1 pound thin bacon
16 russet potatoes
6 tablespoons canola oil
4 sticks (1 pound) salted butter, plus more for buttering baking dish
2 cups sour cream
2 cups grated Cheddar or Jack (or a mix of both), plus more for topping
2 cups whole milk
4 teaspoons seasoned salt
6 green onions, sliced
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Cook the bacon in a saute pan until crispy; let cool and then crumble.

Scrub the potatoes, then place them on baking sheets. Rub the potatoes with the canola oil and bake until tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Remove the potatoes and lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F.

Slice the butter into pats and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add the bacon and sour cream. With a sharp knife, cut each potato in half lengthwise and scrape out the insides into the mixing bowl. Tear up 3 of the skins and throw them in. Smash the potatoes with a potato masher. Add the cheese, milk, seasoned salt, green onions and some salt and pepper and mix together well.

Butter a baking dish, and then spoon the mixture into the dish, top with more grated cheese and bake until warmed through, 25 to 30 minutes.

I Think I Like It

When I started this I was set on just getting a quick finish using pieces of a UFO and then sending it off for Hands 2 Help.
Long line of chain sewing!
But I think I might like it enough to keep it now that I've actually put it together this way.  I really do not need another quilt though. I am happy to have a quilt that I really like from a box of UFO units that were not going anywhere.  I will just keep reminding myself that it is to give away.
Ready to web together!
Black inner border for sure.  Then I'll see what's in the pink stash for an outer border.

Au Revoir, Paris!

Stash Report 040316

During Spring Break we went to see several colleges for Middle E.   We ended up in my former home town and stayed with one of my mother's good friends.  She sews and quilts so it was interesting to see what she's been working on.

It was also neat to see some quilts that my mother had given to her.  I was so pleased to be able to recognize my mother's work and style.  Good for the girls to see more of her work as well.

While in her home, I learned that Mrs. M loves all things Paris. I was reminded of this fabric I had bought for a very specific occasion two summers ago.  Obviously it didn't get made and I now have fabric that I have absolutely no need for but can't bring myself to cut into random scraps.
Au revoir, Paris!
So I packaged up the fabric to send to Mrs. M with my thank you note and am congratulating myself on a fabric outage this week with no work involved!!
